Is ketamine an animal tranquilizer?
Ketamine was FDA approved as an anesthetic (for humans) in 1970. It is classified as an anesthetic, not a tranquilizer. Anesthetics work as analgesics and have sedative qualities, while tranquilizers (ex. Ativan, klonopin, Librium) have anxiolytic effects. There are many examples of veterinary practices finding useful purpose for drugs used by humans, and ketamine is a commonly used anesthetic in veterinary medicine.
