What is a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

A Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a nurse that has completed a master's or doctoral degree program and received advanced clinical training in the specialty of psychiatry. Psychiatric NPs can autonomously evaluate patients, diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe treatment to manage mental health conditions, and perform psychotherapy. They are also guided by nursing principles that emphasize wellness and treatment of the whole person.
